Letter to Irene
Words and Music by Anna Rundall

This is a letter to a little girl
who waited by the busstop with her sister
Saturday
Still no mention of the time to say goodbye
big girls don't cry, don't ask me why
just say goodbye
"Do you have the things you need"
"I'll let you know"
She is tugging on my jacket
please don't go

My life moves on as she runs faster than
her little feet can carry her Away
I ride away
Why won't I stay

A song of buses, trains and aeroplanes
and immigrants in line like long ago
Why did I go?
I see you wash yourself
and not get clean
Recurring dreams of things
no child should hide
God knows we tried

There's a piece of you that stayed with me that night
It's the woman that he broke in you and I

But life goes on
we are still young
the scars will heal, don't dare to feel
or you will die
Such a lie..

If I could do it all once more
I would have grabbed your hand before they closed the door
I closed the door
Are you all right?
Why won't you write.....
